Four disciplines, but really four ways to read the same reality.
The Chain: Mathematics, Physics, Chemistry, Biology
They are not separate fields. They are layers of the same reality.
I saw this in education. Mathematics sits at the top. Below it physics. Below that chemistry. Below that biology. Each subject sits below the previous one. That is felt in how it is taught. Mathematics is pure. It deals with truth. Physics is applied mathematics. Chemistry is what physics does with matter. Biology is what chemistry does with life.
This is not accidental. It reflects a hierarchy. Mathematics is abstract, therefore powerful. Physics is less abstract. Chemistry less still. Biology is almost entirely concrete. So biology sits at the bottom.
But this is backwards. The truth is the other way around.
Biology can exist without mathematics. All life on earth grows without mathematics. Animals have no concept of number and reproduce perfectly. Plants grow without algebra. Biology is not "chemistry that is alive." Biology is the most primitive and powerful system.
Chemistry can exist without physics. Early chemists needed no quantum mechanics. They did experiments. They recorded what worked. Chemistry in many ways is older than physics.
Physics can exist without mathematics. Physics arose as observation. Why does a stone fall? Why do stars orbit? These were observations, not mathematical proofs. Mathematics came later to describe the patterns.
So the hierarchy is inverted. Mathematics is the least fundamental. It is a tool. A legacy of how we describe things. But not why they work.
Why do I say this in a blog about emotional intelligence? Because we make the same mistake in thinking. We say that rational thinking ranks higher than intuition. Analytical above emotional. System above relationship.
But intuition can exist without analysis. Love can exist without words. Trust can exist without contracts. These are not lower levels of the same thing. They are more fundamental versions of the same reason we have.
Mathematics is not truth. Mathematics is language. It is how we describe what we observe. But observing can happen without language.
The great error is thinking that the more abstract must be understood from the concrete. So mathematics must be understood from physics, physics from chemistry, chemistry from biology. But you cannot do it the other way around. You cannot explain biology with mathematics. You cannot reduce life to equations.
This has consequences. We teach children that language ranks above feeling. That system ranks above relationship. That analysis ranks above intuition. This is wrong. This is inverted.
The truth is that both are true. But the deeper truth always lies in the concrete. In life. In feeling.
